Best “Off-Season” European Beaches

The beaches of the Mediterranean are among the most beautiful in the world. But like many other capital beach destinations around the globe, summertime in Europe sees large crowds flocking to the beaches and temperatures that can be downright oppressive. The good news is that those beaches are just as beautiful in the Fall months and you’ll find much smaller crowds and cooler temperatures. Here are some of the top “off-season” beaches in Europe.

Algarve, Portugal has plenty of beaches but Caneiros is one of the more laid-back options. The sand is a beautiful yellow and the shoreline is surrounded by high, rocky cliffs. When you’re done playing in the water you can explore any one of the numerous caves that dot the cliffs and finish your day at one of the many amazing restaurants in the area.

Crete, Greece

Crete has the distinction of having the “longest” summer season anywhere in Greece, so you’ll still be able to experience plenty of warm weather and amazing beaches. The sands at Elafonissi are a gorgeous pink and the water is gin-clear. If you’re looking for a mid-Autumn snorkeling getaway, this is the place to be!

Nauthólsvík in Iceland’s capital of Reykjavík probably isn’t the first place you think of when you consider beach getaways in the Fall. While it’s true that the air temperature is freezing, the waters at Nauthólsvík are heated geothermally so you can experience one of the most unique off-season beach trips on the planet.

San Ciprianu

Corsica’s San Ciprianu beach is one of France’s best. The water is a manageable 70 degrees during the month of October so you won’t freeze to death while taking a dip. However, some of the best experiences happen on the water as opposed to in it. The kayaking and sailing in this area are second to none.

Governor’s Beach

The island of Cyprus is far enough south that visitors are rewarded with an extended summer, especially at Limassol, one of the island’s southernmost points. In October, you’ll find water temperatures around the mid-70s, gorgeous cliff-backed beaches, and enough hotels and restaurants to have your nightlife thoroughly covered as well.
