The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and the Economics practice at AECOM recently published their 2016 report of the “definitive annual attendance study for the themed entertainment and museum industries.” Here are the top 10 most visited museums in the world.
10. Tate Modern (London, U.K)
The Tate Modern, in London, is an international modern and contemporary art museum. The Tate first opened in 1897. Today it has 4 major sites that are homes to 70,000 artworks.
9. Vatican Museums (Vatican, Vatican City)
The Vatican Museums are a collection of museums that range from Christian memorabilia and history, art works and gardens. The museum is home to art works by famed painters such as Leonardo Di Vinci and Raphael.
8. National Gallery (London, U.K.)
According to the museum’s website, “The National Gallery houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the 13th to the 19th centuries. It is on show 361 days a year, free of charge.”
7. Shanghai Science & Technology Museum (Shanghai, China)
The Shanghai Science & Technology Museum has 13 main exhibits and 4 science theaters. Some of the permanent exhibits include Spectrum of Life, Spectrum of Life, and Earth Exploration.

The report says the reason this museum was the most attended was due to three factors: “sheer population size, free admission, and being in a major tourist destination city.”
