Summer is upon us, and whether you’ve got a big vacation planned or not, there’s a chance you may find yourself heading to the beach at some point. For many, a good book is a vital item to have when it comes to the beach. Here’s a list of some of the best “beach books” and the towns they’re based in, just in case you need some vacation inspiration.
Nights in Rodanthe
By Nicholas Sparks
If you’re heading to the beaches of North Carolina this summer, Nights in Rodanthe is a great piece of fiction to take along. The story takes place in the town of the same name, and if you’re into stories about “finding yourself,” after some trying life challenges, this is a great choice.
The Old Man and the Sea
By Ernest Hemingway
You can really hit up just about any beach with just about any Hemingway novel and be just fine, but the Old Man and the Sea is the quintessential beach read. The story takes place in the straits between Florida and Cuba, so it doesn’t matter whether you’re chilling in Key West or Cuba, it’s an excellent beach read.
The BodySurfers
By Robert Drewe
If you’re heading to the beaches of Australia this summer, The Bodysurfers by Robert Drewe is the book to take with you. This one is literally beach life in fiction form.
Bonjour Tristesse
By Francoise Sagan
This classic story takes place on the French Riviera. In its day, Bonjour Tristesse was pretty raunchy. It won’t shock nearly as many readers today, but it’s still a great read for folks that are lucky enough to be heading to the French Riviera this summer (although it doesn’t take much to picture yourself there, regardless of the beach you’re on).
The Identicals
By Elin Hildebrand
Cape Cod is a top destination for summer beach getaways, and The Identicals by Elin Hildebrand is a great book to take along. Along with the fun, Martha’s Vineyard setting, this book has a story about identical twins with personalities that couldn’t be more different.
